We were notified about George Steele by a relative and with further research by Ian Johnstone.
Private Steele is of four newly notified or discovered names that will be added to Bramley War Memorial when a new plaque is commisioned.
George was born on 4th January 1916 to Arthur Steele and Bertha Steele (nee Cole). His parents were married in 1905 at Ebenezer Chapel, Stanningley Road, Bramley (now Robson & Ellis Funeral Directors).
George’s birth was registered in Bramley.
In 1939 George was living with his parents at 88 Town Street, Bramley and working as a Grocer’s Assistant.
He married Alice Hunt in autumn 1941 at St. John the Baptist, New Wortley.
George died on 18th July 1944 in the Normandy Campaign following D Day and is buried at Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery in Normandy. He was serving in the 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.
The photo accompanying this post shows him in the West Yorkshire Regiment uniform and is believed to be prior to his transfer to the East Yorkshire Regiment.
